You’ve seen it. Your dog trots ahead of you on the trail, nose occasionally lifting to the air, body loose, moving in that unhurried, non-linear way that doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere in particular. They’re not tracking something down. They’re not on high alert. They’re not waiting for a cue from you. They’re just… moving through the world.
That behavior has a name: Exploring. And far from being something your dog does when there’s “nothing else going on,” it is one of the most important, welfare-significant behaviors your dog can express — and one of the most commonly deprived.
What Exploring Actually Is (According to Ethology)
In Kim Brophey’s Behavioral Diversity Ethogram Program, Exploring is defined as moving through novel environments or conditions freely, seeking without a target, with non-linear movements — often at a trot or run.
That last part is important: seeking without a target. Exploring is not tracking a specific scent. It’s not investigating a particular object. It’s not oriented toward any one stimulus. It is open-ended, purposeless-looking locomotion through an environment — and that apparent purposelessness is exactly the point.
Brophey describes it with a beautiful analogy: it’s like going to the grocery store when you don’t know what you want for dinner. You’re not looking for anything in particular. There’s no target in mind, no specific activity, no item on the list. You’re just checking things out, seeing what opportunities the environment has to offer. That’s your dog when they’re trotting through a field, weaving left and right, nose up, nose down, circling back on something interesting, then moving on.
That is Exploring. And it’s a highly motivated, species-typical behavior with real biological roots.
The Neuroscience Behind It: Meet the SEEKING System
Here’s where things get really interesting — because Exploring isn’t just an ethological observation. It has a neurobiological home.
Affective neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp identified seven primary emotional systems shared across mammalian species — and chief among them is the SEEKING system: a brain circuit rooted in subcortical, dopaminergic pathways that drives animals to explore, discover, and pursue resources in their environment (Panksepp, 1998; Panksepp, 2005). Crucially, the SEEKING system isn’t about the pleasure of having something — it’s about the excitement and anticipation of looking. It is the engine of curiosity itself.
When a dog is freely moving through a novel environment, nose up and body loose, gathering information without a fixed goal — that is the SEEKING system doing exactly what it was built to do. Research in mammals confirms that novel stimuli excite dopamine neurons and activate brain regions that receive dopaminergic input, and that dopamine specifically drives exploratory behavior in novel environments (Averbeck, 2014). The mesolimbic dopamine system doesn’t just reward finding things — it rewards the act of seeking.
What happens when that system can’t fire? According to Panksepp’s framework, environments that are overly predictable or that consistently block opportunities for self-directed exploration fail to adequately stimulate the SEEKING system — resulting in reduced dopaminergic tone and, in some cases, an overactivation of the system that manifests as stereotypic or compulsive behaviors (Panksepp, 1998). This pattern has since been documented across a range of captive mammalian species, including non-human primates (Mota-Rojas et al., 2025). In simpler terms: a dog who never gets to really explore isn’t just bored. Their brain is being deprived of a neurochemical experience it is designed to need.
A Preemptive Behavior — The Gateway to Everything Else
Exploring is best understood as a preemptive foraging behavior — a kind of appetitive state that sets the stage for other behaviors to unfold.
When a dog is exploring, they might quickly transition into tracking scent along the ground, or air scenting, or digging at something they found in the earth, or orienting on something that caught their attention, or navigating an obstacle in their path. Exploring is often the opening move before any of these other behaviors emerge.
Think of it as the behavioral equivalent of scanning the landscape before deciding what to do next. It is fundamentally about gathering information — moving through space with an open, receptive posture, letting the environment reveal what’s there.
This is also why Exploring and Obstacle Navigation are so closely related. A dog might be exploring, encounter a log or a boulder or a low wall, navigate it, and then return to exploring again. The transition is seamless. A dog who only explores on flat, uniform ground — and never gets to navigate obstacles along the way — does not receive the same welfare benefit as a dog whose exploration naturally includes varied terrain, elevation changes, and things to move over, under, and through.
The environment shapes the richness of the behavior.
Why Exploring Matters: A Highly Motivated Need
Exploring isn’t an optional extra. It is a highly motivated, species-typical behavior — meaning that preventing a dog from doing it carries a real welfare cost. These are not tricks or trained skills. They are motivational instincts dogs have inherited for how they move through the world. When dogs cannot act on those instincts, the drive doesn’t vanish. It goes unmet. And unmet behavioral needs have welfare consequences in what the Five Domains framework calls the behavioral domain — domain four.
Think about what the daily reality looks like for many pet dogs: every outdoor moment is a structured activity, a rushed bathroom break, or a short leash pulling them forward at a human’s pace. There is no room to wander, to double back, to follow something interesting. That motivated behavioral drive doesn’t disappear in those conditions. It simply has nowhere to go.
Research across captive species consistently supports this concern. Miller et al. (2020) found that greater behavioral diversity — the range of natural behaviors an animal expresses — correlates with reduced physiological signs of stress. And environmental enrichment science has long defined its goal as exactly that: increasing behavioral diversity, reducing abnormal behaviors, and increasing the animal’s ability to cope with the challenges of captivity (Newberry, 1995).
Exploring contributes to that diversity in a specific way: it feeds into so many other behaviors. A dog who gets to explore is a dog who then gets to track a scent, investigate something unexpected, navigate terrain, encounter novelty and respond to it. Exploring creates the conditions for behavioral richness. Without it, many of those downstream behaviors simply don’t occur — because the dog never had the opportunity to encounter the stimuli that would have catalyzed them.
The Problem With “Just a Walk Around the Block”
Consider what many pet dogs’ daily reality looks like: a leash walk on pavement around the block, in an urban or suburban environment, moving in a relatively straight line, on a single plane. Maybe a quick bathroom stop in the grass. Then back inside.
It’s not nothing. But it’s a far cry from what Exploring was designed — evolutionarily — to look like.
The average dog walked on a leash around the block on pavement is living in a “singular plane reality.” Maybe one surface, maybe a couple of opportunities to step up on something, if the person allows it. But many people don’t even let their dogs step up on little walls, rocks, or benches — they feel like the dog just needs to stay on the ground.
What gets missed is not just the physical variety. What gets missed is the information. When a dog explores — truly explores — they are reading the environment with their whole body: nose up, nose down, pausing, veering, backtracking, following invisible trails. They are using their senses in an integrated, active, self-directed way. A straight leash walk on pavement offers almost none of that.
This is not a critique of leash walks — we live in a real world with real constraints. But it is a call to be honest about what those walks are actually providing, and what they’re not.
What the Research Says: Sniffing, Autonomy, and Optimism
One of the most compelling studies in recent canine welfare science directly supports the case for giving dogs more of this kind of freedom. Duranton & Horowitz (2019) found that dogs who spent two weeks doing nosework — an olfaction-based activity that lets them use their nose and make their own choices — became measurably more optimistic compared to dogs who did heelwork instead. Both groups moved around and received food rewards, but the nosework dogs had something extra: the ability to use their nose and exercise choice about how they moved through their search. That autonomy and olfactory engagement shifted their cognitive bias toward a more positive emotional state.
The researchers’ conclusion is worth sitting with: “allowing dogs more ‘foraging’ time, their welfare is improved.” The key ingredients were natural behavior expression and agency — two things that lie at the very heart of Exploring.
Novelty matters here too. Research in mammals shows that novel stimuli specifically activate dopamine neurons and information-seeking circuitry — novelty isn’t a luxury, it’s a biological signal the brain is wired to respond to (Averbeck, 2014). The same backyard, walked in the same pattern every day, rapidly loses its informational richness for a dog. New environments, new routes, new terrain — these aren’t just “nice to have.” They are part of what makes Exploring actually work as a welfare-positive experience.

This is an example of what a welfare-positive environment for exploring looks like: novel terrain, freedom of movement, and no agenda other than letting them be dogs.
What This Looks Like in Practice: Affordance Environments for Exploring
If Exploring is a highly motivated, welfare-relevant behavior, the question becomes: what does an environment that actually supports it look like?
Exploring requires novel environments or conditions and freedom of movement. Both parts matter — and the good news is that you don’t need 15 acres to make progress.
Freedom of movement means non-linear, self-directed movement — not a structured route, not constant redirection, not a pace dictated entirely by the human’s schedule. This is where the decompression walk (or sniffari, or free-choice walk) is such a powerful affordance. Let the dog lead. Let them stop, backtrack, veer off the path, spend four minutes smelling one spot. The meandering, non-linear quality of Exploring is not inefficiency — it is the behavior itself.
Some practical environments and affordances that genuinely support Exploring:
- Sniff spots and enclosed natural areas where dogs can move freely off-leash or on a long line through varied, natural terrain
- Long-line walking in open spaces — 20–30 feet of lead gives the dog meaningful freedom to choose their own path
- Varied walking routes rather than the same neighborhood loop every day
- Natural environments with varied terrain — grass, dirt, brush, varying elevation — which also layers in Obstacle Navigation naturally
- Sniffaris in new locations — even a new parking lot, a new park, or a new neighborhood provides novel olfactory and sensory information
- Time outdoors that is not task-directed — not fetch, not training, not structured play, just being in an environment and moving through it freely
The goal is not perfection — it’s restoring some measure of what Exploring was designed to do: allow a dog to move through a world that is informative, varied, and responsive to their curiosity.
The Bigger Picture
When we watch a dog trot through an open space — nose up, body loose, moving in that free, meandering way — we are watching something that is not just pleasant to observe. We are watching biological integrity in action. We are watching the SEEKING system do what it was built to do. We are watching a dog be, in the most fundamental sense, who they were made to be.
It invites us to see that moment with new eyes: not as a dog “doing nothing,” but as a dog expressing one of their most important and highly motivated natural behaviors. And it invites us to ask, honestly, how often we are providing the conditions that make that possible.
Not every dog will have access to open trails and endless acreage. But every dog deserves more than a straight line on pavement. The goal is to find, within the reality of your dog’s life and their unique L.E.G.S., ways to give them space (physical and temporal) to just go see what’s out there.
Because for dogs, going to see what’s out there is not a luxury. It’s a need.
