Enrichment That Starts With Intention

Not all sniffing is calming—but the right kind can be.

Sniffing serves many purposes for dogs. In some contexts, it can increase arousal—such as tracking or hunting. In others, like low-pressure foraging, it can support emotional regulation, thoughtful engagement, and decompression.

Snuffle mats are designed to encourage foraging-style sniffing: slow, exploratory, and self-directed. When introduced intentionally and used in the right moments, they can help dogs engage their brains, make choices, and settle into a calmer state—turning everyday food into meaningful enrichment instead of rushed routines.

Snuffle mats aren’t just “busy toys.” When used thoughtfully, they can support:

  • Cognitive enrichment through problem-solving and scent exploration
  • Emotional regulation by promoting slower, intentional engagement
  • Choice and agency, allowing dogs to opt in at their own pace
  • Slower eating, which may support digestion and reduce frustration
  • Low-pressure enrichment that fits real life and busy households

The goal isn’t to tire your dog out—it’s to meet an emotional and cognitive need in a way that feels safe, predictable, and empowering.

Introduction to Freework video that shows an example of how snuffle mats can be used.

Choose a snuffle mat

Small Snuffle Mat

Small Snuffle Mat 4" x 6" | 7 oz

Best for:

  • Small dogs only

  • Dogs who are already familiar with using snuffle mats

  • On-the-go enrichment, such as during walks or outings

  • Short, focused sniffing sessions

This size is not recommended for large dogs who are new to snuffle mats, as they may attempt to pick up or chew the mat, creating a choking or ingestion hazard. When used appropriately and under supervision, the small snuffle mat is a convenient option for quick enrichment moments outside the home.

Large Snuffle Mat

Large Snuffle Mat 12" x 10" | 2 lbs

Best for:

  • Dogs of any size, including small dogs

  • Dogs new to snuffle mats who benefit from more space and visibility

  • Longer sniffing and foraging sessions

  • Dogs who need help slowing down and pacing themselves

The larger surface area allows treats to be spaced farther apart, encouraging slower exploration and more thoughtful engagement. This makes it a versatile option for most dogs and ideal for guardians looking to offer sustained, low-pressure enrichment.

hAND MADE WITH LOVE

Each snuffle mat is handmade with love by my grandma and me. What started as a way to create thoughtful enrichment for dogs has become a small, family-made labor of care. Every mat is assembled slowly and intentionally—because how something is made matters just as much as how it’s used.

To support real life with dogs, all mats are also machine washable. When they need a refresh, simply wash on a gentle cycle and let them air dry—so your dog can continue enjoying safe, meaningful enrichment.
